Blog 5: Your career

I’m a law student,
My reasons to study this career are a lot, but principally are this:
1) A thirst of justice. Yes, sounds dramatic, but since I was a child, I realized of certain injustices in a different aspects of the life. I saw people who were passed over their rights. For that reasons, I grew up believing in find, fight and defend the justice.
2) My humanist soul. In the school I was a hard working student, but principally I worked very hard in the science area.
The numbers had been always an enemy for me. Even I have memories of me in second grade of school putting a sticker of “Odio las matemáticas” (I hate math) on a book. Besides, I was very scrupulous, so in biology class several times I wanted to vomit (when we have to cut off a pig’s brain, or a cow’s eye, it was very disgusting to me)
Physics…don’t mention it, it has numbers so I hated too.
Finally, Chemistry involves numbers, calculations, and other non exciting things.
For all these reasons, the world of letters was always my thing, and I have to say that it wasn’t so hard to me; I have skills in history, literature and philosophy
3) I like to read. Yep, is important in the law career, you read a LOT. In that I include a lot of not funny texts.
4) A dirty reason: The money. If I don’t like money, I were study cooking or fashion design. You could be successful in those careers, but is a little less probable. Studying law, I have a “safe bet” (I put it between a quote because right now a lot of people is studying law, so I have less chances in the future, but I already made my bet).
5) Related with the number four: economic independence.
My favorite subject? Hmm, that’s a hard question. In my two and a half years studying law, I think that civil law attracts me a little, but this semester is pretty boring (things, real rights). Also I like Commercial law, but I’m only in my first semester, so I don’t know if this interest will follow the next semesters. I think that interest for private law was seeded in my first year when I took the Roman law subject.
I have a little interest in administrative law. In the past, I liked sociology of law.
The professionals in my area can contribute to society in a many ways: helping them to solve their problems; supporting their rights; advice them in their enterprises; etc. However, the image of the lawyers in this society is very down, because we are usually seen as thieves, but this happens for a little number of unscrupulous people who calls himself “lawyers”, but they are everything less that. They take advantage of their knowledge to scam their clients.
I think lately that the most important tool that a lawyer can have is work ethic and personal ethic. In this career you can always count with the possibility of go deep down morally speaking. The ambition and thirst of money can corrupt people in a lot of ways, and that can make you blind about what is your mission as a lawyer.
I believe that every person who ingress to this career, did it at first looking for some justice (even in a little part), trying to make this world a better place. I think that ideal must stay along the life of a lawyer.
